Gospel Good News
3rd Sunday of Easter - Year A - Luke 24:13-35.
This week more people encounter the risen Jesus. Two disciples of Jesus were on their way to Emmaus when they meet Jesus but do not recognise him. The disciples explain they are downcast because of the death of the prophet, Jesus of Nazareth. They’ve heard rumours he is still alive but no one is sure what to believe. Jesus speaks to them of the prophets, explaining the Scriptures, and that “the Christ should suffer and so enter into his glory”. It’s getting dark and they invite Jesus to join them for a meal. At the table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it and handed it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised Jesus, but then he was gone. The disciples said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?’ We reflect on how we recognise Jesus, and how our hearts burn.

Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Sydney ~ 2017
15,000 young people are expected to travel to Sydney for the Australian Catholic Youth Festival to be held 7-9 December 2017. The theme of this Festival is Open new horizons for spreading joy. The Festival offers a multitude of ways of expressing Catholic faith in an amazing three-day experience. ACYF will be held at Sydney Olympic Park and other nearby venues. The Festival is for year 9 to 30* year olds (*Note age bracket has been extended). Registration cost for participants from Ballarat Diocese is expected to be around $190 (covers all 3 days – a meal ticket will be extra).
Parishes and schools are asked to consider sending a group. Smaller parishes might join together or connect their young people with another parish. Ballarat Diocese will be assisting with this, including planning travel and accommodation. Contact us at email@example.com if you want more details or want to organise a group to go.
ACYF is hosted by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. The idea of hosting a large national festival grew out of Australia’s involvement in World Youth Days and a wish to gather Australia’s Catholic youth together. It exists to provide young people with opportunities to explore and deepen their faith, to be empowered to be agents of change in the world today, and to encounter and celebrate the diversity and vitality of Catholic faith in Australia. It also gives the Bishops of Australia the opportunity to hear and meet the young people of Australia. The first Festival was held in Melbourne in 2013 and the second in Adelaide in 2015. Many young people from Ballarat Diocese, together with Bishop Paul Bird, attended both events. An even bigger number of participants and leaders is expected to make the journey from our diocese to Sydney 7-9 December 2017.
Information updates will be posted here regularly and also you can check the ACYF site here

Year of Youth 2018
The Catholic Bishops of Australia invite Catholics across the country to join in celebrating a Year of Youth from the beginning of Advent 2017 to the end of 2018. The theme is, ‘Open New Horizons for Spreading Joy: Young People, Faith and Vocational Discernment’. The emphasis is on local discussion and dialogue in parishes, schools, youth groups and dioceses. The Year of Youth will be launched at a huge stadium Mass at the next Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Sydney in December 2017.
The Catholic Bishops said: “Young people have a great capacity to address injustice and create new opportunities for joy and hope. Today, many young people want to serve, and others are willing to take a chance to make the world a better place.”
Ballarat Diocese will be finding many different ways to focus on the Year of Youth 2018.
We look forward to sharing ideas and plans with you.
